What exactly do you do today to celebrate Star Wars?
Today is a day that many geeks look forward to all year long: the fourth of /4/- or “/4/the 4th be with You Day,” according to Star Wars. It isn’t just a fun pun, it is something that turned into a legitimate holiday and celebration that occurs throughout the world – even in countries that don’t call it “May.”
As many legends have it, and according to the origin story recognized by Lucasfilm, the company that produced Star Wars, the phrase was first used on /4/4, 1979, the day Margaret Thatcher took office as UK prime minister. After that day, the Conservative party allegedly placed an ad in the London Evening News which read, “/4/the Fourth Be With You, Maggie. Congratulations.”
It took off on social media, and has only been getting bigger and bigger for the last few years. It has taken off and now there are online and in-store deals on Star Wars memorabilia, merchandise, costumes, and gaming. There are special showings of the movies, specialty food offerings, and fan events where everyone can dress up and answer trivia about their favorite films.
