Chinese company, Xiaomi, unveiled a video camera that takes on GoPro at a much lower price point. And it looks good, too.
GoPro is the undisputed leader in action cameras. Several consumer electronics companies have launched competing products in the past 12 months. Now, Chinese consumer electronics company, Xiaomi, gets into the game with a ultra-low priced action camera. The Xiaomi YiCamera sells in China for $63.60 (399 Yuan).
The YiCamera measures 60.4mm x 42mm x 21.2mm and weighs 72g. A Sony 16MP Exmor R BSI CMOS sensor is at the heart of the YiCamera, allowing video capture of up to 1080p at 60fps. Xiaomi integrated a HD lens with F2.8 aperture and 155 degrees super wide-angle in front of the image sensor. Users can insert a microSD card with up to 64GB into the YiCamera. Like the GoPro camera the YiCamera has a Wi-Fi interface. It also offers Bluetooth 4.0 connectivity.
The YiCamera comes as basic edition and in a travel edition. The travel edition includes a selfie mount.
Xiaomi sells the YiCamera in China right now on mi.com. It is not known if Xiaomi will bring the YiCamera to markets outside of China. Even at a price-tag of $99 the YiCamera still would sound like a solid offering and cheap alternative to a GoPro camera.
Xiaomi is growing rapidly in China, but has not entered the US market yet, although it announced to launch their online shop mi.com last month. The Xiaomi store will offer headphones, smart home devices, and the popular Mi Bunnies. It is likely that the store will offer the YiCamera as well.
There are no plans that Xiaomi will sell their smartphones in the United States yet, as there are several patent and carrier issues to resolve first.
