Skype Crashes if You Send These 8 Characters

Once the 8 character bug “http://:” enters Skype chat history the app keeps on crashing and you have to reinstall the Skype app.

Recently Skype users discovered the existence of an eight character bug that makes the app crash. Once the characters “http://:” enters a Skype chat the app on both the receiver and senders device crashes. Sending the bug characters makes the app crash while the receivers app keeps on crashing every time they try to login to Skype. 

The bug was first discovered when a user by the name of ‘Giperion’ reported about the problem on community forum pages of Skype. According to the complaint the app crashed every time and even re-downloading and clearing the chat history is not helpful as Skype re-downloads the chat history from its server every time it is downloaded again resulting in a crash. 

The bug makes the app Skype crash every single time users try to login in to the app on Windows, Android and iOS devices. However the bug does not work on the Mac or the version of Skype on the latest Windows.

Interestingly it was found that only receiving the bug on the Android and iOS made Skype crash and it does not affect the sender. A temporary solution was reported by another user as if the sender deletes the bug characters then the receiver can install an older version of Skype which does not crash and functions properly.

On Windows the Skype version 7.x can be exchanged for the version 6.x., however on the Android and app stores as only the latest versions of the apps are available the solution cannot be practiced. 

Skype has confirmed the bug.A Skype spokesperson later responded to users by saying they are aware of the bug and are working on a solution to the problem. 

“We are aware of the problem and are working to provide an resolution,” a Skype spokesperson told VentureBeat.
