Vic Gundotra, Google+ chief, suddenly resigns

45-year old Vic Gundotra, who is Google’s Senior Vice President for Social, has resigned. The reason for his sudden departure is still unclear, but some say there were tensions between Gundotra and other top engineers at Google.

Last week, someone posted on the anonymous mobile application, Secret, that Google’s Vic Gundotra is interviewing for another job. As to where, it’s uncertain. But it’s true that the Senior Vice President of Social, a.k.a. Google’s Social Czar, is leaving the company.

Gundotra confirmed his departure on his Google+ profile today. “Today I’m announcing my departure from Google after almost 8 years,” writes Gundotra. “I am excited about what’s next. But this isn’t the day to talk about that. This is a day to celebrate the past 8 years. To cry. And smile. And to look forward to the journey yet to come.”

Gundotra, who was a general manager at Microsoft, is instrumental in the creation of Google+, the company’s social networking service. Google CEO Larry Page thanked Gundotra for cutting his teeth on the company’s mobile apps and developer relations, and building Google+ from nothing.

“There are few people with the courage and ability to start something like that and I am very grateful for all your hard work and passion,” Page said about Gundotra.

It’s unclear who will be taking over Gundotra’s position. But according to Re/code, citing sources, David Besbris, Google’s VP of Engineering, is poised to replace the 45-year old Gundotra.

Rumor has it that a friction inside Google’s “L team” /4/have contributed to Gundotra’s sudden departure.
