Enter FB Newswire, Facebook’s social news aggregator
Facebook’s push into news-making went full throttle this year when it announced Paper, the social network’s news app. It’s basically Facebook without the fuss. But Facebook is upping the ante today by adding a new tool for journalists.
Dubbed “FB Newswire,” the Facebook page aims to provide breaking news to its users, specifically journalists and news lovers.
Facebook has partnered with Ireland-based Storyful, a social news aggregation startup that was recently acquired by News Corp, to aggregate newsworthy content shared on Facebook by individuals and organizations.
FB Newswire, which can be accessed at Facebook.com/FBNewswire, will include breaking posts, photos, videos, and status updates. Recent posts include this bush fire in New Jersey and school bus crash in Anaheim, California.
Interestingly, Newswire is also available on Twitter at @FBNewswire.
Obviously Facebook is going head to head with Twitter here. The tweets on @FBNewswire are linked to its corresponding posts on Facebook.
“News is finding a bigger audience on Facebook than ever before. Journalists and media organizations have become an integral part of Facebook, which is visible in features like Trending Topics, improvements to Pages, and recent changes to News Feed,” writes Andy Mitchell, Director of News and Global Media Partnerships at Facebook. “Publishers are seeing the results of our commitment, with referral traffic from Facebook to media sites growing more than 4x in 2013, and we’re excited to deepen our relationship with media organizations and journalists in the days to come.”
