Apple nabs $119 million in patent damages from Samsung

It’s a win again for Apple.

A federal jury in the Apple versus Samsung case ruled that Samsung’s products infringed on two Apple patents. The jury ordered the South Korean technology giant to pay $119.6 million in damages to Apple.

Specifically, the jury ruled that all Samsung phones involved in the case infringed the ’647 “quick-links” patent. As for the  ’721 “slide-to-unlock” patent, the jury found that only a few Samsung devices infringed the patent.

However, Samsung managed to win a little, as the jury delivered a mixed verdict.

Apple was also ordered to pay $158,400 to Samsung for infringing a patent. Samsung countersued with two patent infringement complaints, but the jury ruled that the violation was not willful. This explains the lesser $158,400 award.

Apple’s $119.6 million win today is far lesser than what the company was seeking. The Cupertino-based technology giant was seeking over $2.2 billion in damages. Samsung, meanwhile, threw wild punches in the air by seeking $38 million.

In spite of these, Apple got the bigger prize and is happy with the decision.

In a statement to Re/code, Apple said: “Today’s ruling reinforces what courts around the world have already found: That Samsung willfully stole our ideas and copied our products. We are fighting to defend the hard work that goes into beloved products like the iPhone, which our employees devote their lives to designing and delivering for our customers.”

Samsung, on the other hand, declined to comment on the report.
