Trial Verdict on round 2 of Apple vs Samsung

Samsung infringed three patents, owes Apple $119.6 million

The dispute between Samsung and apple never seems to come to an end. The debate about whether Samsung made use of Appl’s technology without realizing it had been going on since a very long time and Apple suggested that Samsung pays an amount in damages. And Apple’s claim finally ended up with a billion dollar win. But with that put to rest, there came in another case which talked about the patents and devices and this is almost coming to an end with the jury ready with their verdict. However there is one issue which needs to be out to rest. This one involves the Galaxy S II and will be decided most probably on Monday. The decision is most likely going to change the final damages tally.

This verdict however is not going to give any win to either of the parties because Apple owes Samsung $158,400 and Samsung will have to cut Apple a check for $119,625,000, a far cry from the $6.2 million and $2.2 billion the parties asked for, respectively. Most of us would be wondering why this is so. Well, apparently Apple has also infringed one of two asserted Samsung patents, while Samsung phones and tablets infringed three of Apple’s five asserted patents.

However, the patent number 5,946,647 was in favor of Apple winning it a complete win over Samsung because the jury figured out that all ten devices under question had been infringed by Samsung. These devices included Admire, Galaxy Nexus, Galaxy Note, Galaxy Note 2, Galaxy S II, Galaxy S II Epic 4G Touch, Galaxy S II Skyrocket, Galaxy S3, Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 and Stratosphere. This patent was for a technology that enables links clicked in one application to open other applications. The 8,046,721 patent is related to Apple’s famed slide-to-unlock feature and Apple once again managed to get successful with this one but it was for a lesser degree since only a few devices of Samsung had this one.
