Sony SmartEyeglass Attempts to Challenge Google Glass

Sony has been cobbling cool stuff lately. For example, its VR headset – Project Morpheus – has already secured the company’s seat in the future, a time when the virtual reality market will saturate. In spite of Sony’s disappointing smartphone sales this year, the company has managed to develop novelty products.

The latest one is the Sony SmartEyeglass, a transparent lens eyewear that will alongside Sony’s smartphones. The concept is similar to Google Glass, although the obvious downside is its bulky design. It’s a good take on Google’s wearable. But it’s not even close.

The Sony SmartEyeglass is still a prototype and won’t be heading to the market soon. For now, Sony is releasing the SDK (software developer kit) to attract developers, who will then make apps for the wearable.

The SmartEyeglass features a transparent 3.0mm lens and  a low-power monochrome display with up to 1,000 cd/m2 luminance. It also has a 3-megapixel camera, speaker, and a slew of sensors designed to support the capabilities of your smartphone.

As for the practical applications of the SmartEyeglass, Sony says that users can check cooking recipes on the fly, view navigation information, and profile athletes and celebrities via social network. As promising as it sounds, the SmartEyeglass is still a mock-up. Make sure to check out the video below.
