Ohio State Buckeyes football coaches will wear “Coach to Cure MD” logos during the game against the Cincinnati Bearcats on Sept. 27 as a sign of support in the fight against Duchenne muscular dystrophy.

Count Ohio State Buckeyes football coaches in as among those joining the fight against Duchenne muscular dystrophy.

As a show of their support, Buckeyes head football coach Urban Meyer and his staff will wear “Coach to Cure MD” logos during the game against the visiting Cincinnati Bearcats on Sept. 27, per The Columbus Dispatch’s Tim May:

“Urban Meyer has never been big on ‘sticking patches on our shoulders’ and playing for just any old cause. But he will be wearing one on Saturday night in support of the fight against Duchenne muscular dystrophy when Ohio State plays host to Cincinnati.

“He and coaches nationwide will wear ‘Coach to Cure MD’ logos in an effort to help raise awareness of, and funds to fight, the affliction, a genetic disorder usually diagnosed during childhood and primarily affecting boys across all races and cultures. Joining Meyer will be two local half-brothers, Jacob Jarvis, 14, and Noah Studebaker, 7, who have Duchenne MD and have been fixtures at OSU practices this year.

“‘I have become close with two members of our team, I consider them, Noah and Jacob, who are stricken with this disease, and we love them to death,’ Meyer said yesterday. ‘So we’re going to do some special things for those guys this week, and I ask for everybody to get involved.

“‘There are so many great things to get involved in, but this hit home…I never knew really very much about the disease, and I do now.’

On the field, the Buckeyes are eager to square off against their in-state oppoonents, the Bearcats, who are seeking to be the first Ohio team to beat Ohio State in 93 years, writes May’s colleague at The Columbus Dispatch, Bill Rabinowitz:

“But Saturday night’s game doesn’t need those emotional attachments to make it a big one. The Bearcats are good enough to have a realistic chance to become the first in-state team since 1921 to beat the Buckeyes.

“‘They would probably party all week in Cincinnati,’ said Ohio State defensive tackle Adolphus Washington, a Cincinnati native.

“Although the Bearcats aren’t a so-called Power Five conference school, Meyer said that they’re ‘absolutely’ as good as many that are.

“‘I was surprised they weren’t invited into (one of the five major conferences),’ Meyer said. ‘I don’t know the whole story. I think we certainly respect them as if they are. We’re watching film, and they’re as good as a lot of the other teams that we have gone up against.’

“Cincinnati rolled to a 34-0 lead in a 58-34 victory over Toledo in its opener. The Bearcats struggled more than expected in a 31-24 win over Miami University on Saturday.

“Quarterback Gunner Kiel, a five-star recruit who bounced around before landing at Cincinnati, has thrown for 10 touchdowns and 689 yards, and he has a deep corps of receivers.

“‘Offensively, they’ve been good in the past,’ Meyer said. ‘They’re exceptional now. The one thing that I remember (Cincinnati coach) Tommy Tuberville saying is that they’re the best group of receivers he’s coached, and that struck a chord with me because I know what he has coached (at Mississippi, Auburn and Texas Tech) — some good teams and good players.’

“The Buckeyes spent the offseason revamping their pass defense, but it hasn’t been consistently challenged in their first three games.

“‘This is the test,’ Meyer said. ‘This is the one that we’re all shooting for. They’re really good at throwing the ball.’

“The Buckeyes didn’t have a game this past weekend, which gave them extra time to prepare for Cincinnati. They practiced last Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, as well as yesterday.”
