This weekend Halloween set the tempo for the audience heading to the theaters to continue the horror and thrilling mood provided by the worldly celebration of all things dead and creepy. Ouija is based on an already established franchise of horror, written by White and Juliet Snowden and directed by Stiles White; the movie touches the story of a group of teenagers who are trying to contact the spirit of their friend who committed suicide.
They use the Ouija board that has supposedly caused the deceased girl to commit suicide. As they use the board, evil is unleashed and it exists with the Ouija board that existed long before any of them. It /4/sound cheesy any other time but in a year in which horror movie genre has done exceptionally well i.e. ‘Annabelle’ and ‘The Purge: Anarchy.’ The movie grossed double digits reaching up too $11 million which is way more than its production budget.
The film stars Olivia Cooke, Daren Kagasoff, Douglas Smith and Bianca A. Santos. It is a must see for the audience who want a scare. The other unexpected thriller to hit the screens with a daze was the Jake Gylenhall starring thriller, Nightcrawler which features Gyllenhall as a desperate man looking for his moment of glory by filming crime scenes.
He ends up promising Rene Russo playing a producer something thrilling and ends up being a part of a criminal spree. Since its release in the Toronto Film Festival, the movie received good reviews and on its US opening proved to be one bone chilling and wrecking adventure. Written and directed by Dan Gilroy, the movie succeeded on the US list, only beat by Ouija.
It grossed around $10 million dollars which definitely makes it a box office success considering its low budget. The film going parallel to the thriller is the war movie Fury starring Brad Pitt and Logan Lerman. Going into the third week of being on the chart, the movie is only going stronger as it earned $9 million to add to its blooming budget.
Speaking of thrillers, the Ben Affleck’s psychological thriller Gone Girl maintained its spot in the list, only two places down at number three. The adaption of the novel ‘Gone Girl’ by Gillian Flynn, the movie is thrilling and keeps you on the edge of the seat while you die every moment with the suspense until the climax ends. Expected to captivate the audience for many weeks to come, Gone Girl managed to scrape off an additional $8.5 million this weekend in the US alone adding to its $136 million revenue worldwide.
The animated feature, The Book of Life featuring the voices of Channing Tatum and Zoe Saldana, came in number fourth. The kids are definitely going to love the animated cardboard characters with the slightly Halloween-is theme involving love, comedy and coming back to life from death.
John Wick, starring Keanu Reeves followed The Book of Life at number 6. The movie earned $8 million dollars which is respectable and the critics called the movie a ‘stylish, giddy and medium paced movie.’ Tickling the funny bone was the Bill Murray and Melissa McCarthy starer St. Vincent. Receiving high accolades in the Sundance Film Festival, the movie managed to remain on the chart in its third week and grossed a total $7.7 million this weekend alone.
Next on the chart is the Disney feature film Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day starring Steve Carrell, Jennifer Garner and Ed Oxenbould. The movie is a light hearted comedy about a family having a bad day and how they come together to turn it around by helping each other. The movie opened with $6.5 million.
The next movie on the chart is Robert Downey Jr. and Robert Duvall featuring family legal drama, The Judge. The courtroom movie earned $3.4 million which was average considering the cast and content of the movie. Next in cue was Dracula Untold with Luke Evans as the man who made the ultimate sacrifice of becoming a vampire to save his people.
Nicholas Sparks’s novel inspired movie The Best of Me with James Marsden and Michelle Monaghan acting in lead roles came in 9th this weekend followed by Michael Keaton’s inspiring Birdman still managing to stay on the chart and picking up $2 million.
