Titans Crowns Jason McCourty As 2014 Community Man Of The Year

Titans have crowned their cornerback, Jason McCourty as the 2014 Walter Payton Man of the Year. The award was given to McCourty for making positive contribution to the society. The news was announced in the team’s official website.

When not playing for the Titans, McCourty has been creating awareness campaigns on Sickle Cell. Besides that, the cornerback has been working tirelessly to inspire the youth by being their role model. He has actually been encouraging them to work out on a regular basis because it’s the only way of preventing obesity among the youth.

McCourty joined Titans back in 1999 during the NFL draft. He is actually among the longest serving captain after being appointed in 2012. Prior to being signed by Titans, he used to play for Rutgers. He is currently included in NFLPA as a representative of the players in the organization.

McCourty said he was more than happy for being considered for the award. “It’s humbling to receive this honor,” McCourty said. “To be able to get out and give back to the community, not only here in Nashville but also back in my hometown is very rewarding. I’m blessed to be in a position to make a difference in the lives of other people. It’s awesome to be able to see the smiles on kids’ faces and let them know that you actually care by giving your time, doing things with them and having a good time.”

And as if that is not enough, the cornerback is his team’s representative for United Way of Metropolitan Nashville and as the Southeast United Dairy Industry Association Fuel Up to Play 60 ambassador. The player is now among the nominees for the 2014 Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year. The winner of the award will be crowned at Super Bowl.

NFL started awarding players with this award back in 1970 as a way of acknowledging their contributions off the field. The award aims to promote a balanced lifestyle among the players that involves shining in the field while at the same time giving back to the society.

NFL changed the name of the award in 1999 in remembrance of Walter Payton. According to the guidelines laid out by NFL, a player can only scoop the award if he has played in three consecutive seasons. This means that even if a player has many points but has missed a season or two, they can not contest for the award.

Titans director of community relations, Tina Tuggle, applauded McCourty for being nominated for the prestigious award. Tuggle said the player is a good player who knows how to balance between work and family and should therefore be emulated by other players.

“I am very proud to have seen Jason grow throughout the years,” said Tuggle. “Jason’s commitment to excellence shows how dedicated he is in all that he does. He is a devoted family man and a great leader on and off the field. It brings me great pleasure to see him receive such a deserving award and know that he will continue to do great things in the Titans community.”
