A groundhog bites a Wisconsin Mayor’s ear on the special occasion of Groundhog Day causing quite a ruckus in the process.
The Mayor of Wisconsin sure learnt a lesson or two in keeping animals (yes that means even cute fuzzy wuzzy ones) at arms length. He was bitten on the ear by a groundhog on the day of celebration named after the animal.
The groundhog, named Jimmy, was the official mascot in Sun Prairie. On Monday, during the heat of the festive occasion, the little critter took a nibble out of the Mayor’s ear thus creating confusion and chaos.
The owner and tactful handler of the groundhog held the animal too close to the Mayor and the result was that it chomped down with its two front buck teeth on the Mayor’s earlobe prompting him to let out a slight whimper of pain.
But the man ought to be given a salute of excellence for not allowing such minor diversions to lead him off-track for he resumed his speech and delivered it to the end without even so much as touching his wounded ear.
Mayor Jonathan Freund is the ultimate stoic indeed. He has the courage of his convictions to not let such irritants as a groundhog biting his ear get to him. And he also kept his cool in a Hemingwayesque manner by sticking to the “Grace under Pressure” formula.
As for the groundhog named Jimmy, it had prognosticated in its own animal way an early spring and must be commended for that. The mayor mentioned the groundhog by name during his speech and he seemed to carry no grudges against the animal since human rationality means that we don’t get mad at irrational entities of Nature when they harm us.
Such things as earthquakes, floods, lightning and wild animals are unconscious forces of this world caught up in the same web or trap as us humans. But whereas human beings have intelligence and are conscious, these are blind forces.
The Mayor went one step further and covered the lapse in behavior by the animal by saying that Jimmy the groundhog had made a prediction or two in his ear. He then told the cheering crowd that the prediction was that there would be a premature spring this year.
Well, now that is what we call a smooth politician with the politesse and finesse it takes to hide any rubble beneath the carpet of normality.
