Toshiba’s 5MP camera module for Project Ara is a big step towards a brighter future in the world of customizable phones.
For those who are unaware of Project Ara, it is an initiative that enables users to create a modular smartphone that is accurately designed according to the choices of their preferred functionality. The technology giant, Toshiba has recently manufactured first of its kind 5 MP camera for Project Ara’s smartphones. According to the reports, a number of technology related individuals consider it a very minor achievement for Project Ara, however, the company has a reason to celebrate considering the requirements and peculiarity of the project nature.
Project Ara is a common spot for all the smartphone manufacturers to build the handset gears. Toshiba has released various camera modules in the past for customizable smartphone platform. The 5 MP camera is the part of Phase 1, Phase 2 will involve a vast choices of modules and Phase 3 will include unique modules. One of the hardest parts of this innovation is to getting the camera to actually work. The usual smartphones have built in cameras, which are fixed at their allocated spot.
However, Project Ara smartphones phones will have a different mechanism, as the camera will work just like plugging a USB device. Project Ara considers Toshiba as a major contributor of the whole project, since it is also designing the basic backbone of the handset, which includes the communication with various modules which can be easily connected and disconnected with the handset.
As far as camera technology is concerned, the user /4/be able to upgrade the smartphone camera by simply detaching the old camera and connecting an upgraded camera module with the handset. Toshiba is also expected to supply the chips for Project Ara smartphones. Since the camera technology has been aggressively enhanced in last few years, it is even hard to believe some specific images taken from a smartphone camera. A 5 MP innovation for a Project Ara smartphone /4/sound a bit uninteresting, but then considering the fact that your handset’s various peripherals can be swapped, this does appear to be a major innovation, which is further expected to grow exponentially.
