Cates Holderness Twitter
The Dress is still the top trending hashtag on Twitter. Buzzfeed has revealed just how big The Dress phenomenon is. One story alone has reached 28 million views.
At Buzzfeed you get a golden crown for writing the post with the most views. Cates Holderness is the new queen at Buzzfeed for picking up “The Dress” story. Her post alone reached 28 million views says BuzzFeed’s Editor-in-Chief Ben Smith. Of course Buzzfeed has following up with many other posts about the extremely viral question about which color a dress is. We have covered the science behind the The Dress yesterday.
The whole thing started with a Tumblr post of by 21-year-old singer Caitlin McNeill living on a small Scottish island. She posted: “guys please help me – is this dress white and gold, or blue and black? Me and my friends can’t agree and we are freaking the f!@# out.”
Humans see different colors throughout the day because of the color changes of daylight. Usually the brain filters out those changes to see the correct colors and object has. The Dress image is though pushing that system to the limit. That is why some people see the dress as black and blue and others see it as white and gold. As #TheDress is still trending number one on Twitter, people around the world are still puzzled by this and engage in vivid controversy.
Buzzfeed’s initial post helped make the story with this post from Holderness viral before all media across the globe got in on the story. Just assuming an moderate page CPM rate, Buzzfeed made about $500,000 in advertising just on that one story about the dress.
I hope there is a financial upside for Cates Holderness and not just the honor of wearing a paper crown.
I’m never taking this off. Thanks, @ohkayewhatever pic.twitter.com/fNefReBnvo— Cates Holderness (@catesish) February 27, 2015
