Streaming giant, Netflix, and acclaimed actor, Leonardo DiCaprio, have partnered together to feature upcoming documentary and docu-series projects about the environment.
Netflix and Leonardo DiCaprio, along with the production company Appian Way, are partnering together. The partnership is the part of a First Look deal for non-fiction projects to be premiered exclusively on Netflix.
The main focus of the projects will be environmental and conservation themes. Netflix and DiCaprio will work together to identify potential projects. The partnership will be valid for a number of years and, under the terms, DiCaprio will act as a producer or executive producer for all the projects to be streamed on Netflix.
The basis of the projects will be on facts rather than fiction with the aim to educate viewers and raise awareness. DiCaprio and Netflix first collaborated together to work on the critically acclaimed documentary ‘Virunga’ which was even nominated at the Academy Awards for the Best Documentary Feature in 2015.
‘Virunga’ is a documentary about the protection of the last mountain Gorillas in Africa. In 2007, DiCaprio also produced another documentary called ‘The 11th Hour’ aimed at the state of the global environment.
According to the Ted Sarandos, the Chief Content Officer at Netflix the partnership with DiCaprio is a natural extension of an already present healthy relationship, as it was the next step for both of them.
In a statement, Leonardo DiCaprio, the five-time Oscar-nominated actor, producer and philanthropist revealed that his vision for the future is not just limited to entertainment but aims to conserve the planet through his work.
DiCaprio believes the move will allow documentary filmmakers a chance to display their documentaries to the world immediately and some very critical work /4/come to light as a result of the partnership between him and Netflix. DiCaprio wants talented storytellers to convey the truth about the planet to the masses in a perilous time and give audiences a glimpse of the facts.
