The Easter Bunny has competition from China. The rare lli Pika aka Magic Bunny is topping the Easter Bunny in cuteness.

The lli Pika has been seen almost as seldom as the Easter Bunny. The so called magic bunny was first seen in the 80s. The super cute bunny has been rarely seen since then. Now National Geographic made the lli Pika famous with several new photos that went viral.

It is estimated that there are only about 1,000 lli Pikas alive today. The lli Pika is more endangered than the famous Panda bears. They live in a very specific environment at a height of 9,200 and 13,450 feet. The climate change has reduced the area where lii Pikas can exist. The bunnies with teddy bear ears feed on grasses, herbs, and other mountain plants and live in small rock caves.

Chinese researcher Li Weidong discovered the magic bunny back in 1983 by coincident. the small 8-inch bunny was not known to science before that time.  Li Weidong has not seen lli Pika again since 1990. Last summer a team of scientists rediscovered the lli Pika again.

Li Weidong hopes that the new reports about the magic bunny will help to create conservation areas for it.

The National Geographic March print issue will have a lli Pika feature.

Planet earth still has species that humans have not discovered yet. Maybe we also miss species as they go extinct. According to the WWF experts estimate that between 0.01 and 0.1% of all species are lost each year. We don’t fully understand how many species are living on planet earth. Estimates range from 2 million to 100 million. Depending on which number is correct, earth loses bweteen 200 and 100,000 species per year.
