  • Jackman shocks world.
  • Speculation abounds.
  • Still a mystery.

Hugh Jackman’s iconic role as Wolverine looks to be ending after posting a picture on his official Instagram. No one knows for certain why, but the internet is scrambling to explain anyway.

Hugh Jackman shocked the world when he posted a picture on Instagram stating “Wolverine…one last time” after claiming he didn’t want to stop the role just this month. The actor has been adamant about how much Wolverine has shaped his career—after all, he’s been playing the character for 15 years. And just to make the declaration the full truth, he signed the picture “HJ”.

Wolverine first appeared in Bryan Singer’s X-Men (2000) and has shown up in 7 movies in total, including X-Men: First Class since the man and character never age. This final appearance will be 8. Or what is assumed to be final appearance.

Jackman opened up on what makes Wolverine a challenge when speaking to Cigar Aficionado in the March/April edition.  E! Online dished a few quotes from the magazine and how playing The Wolverine really sets a pace for the actor.

“Every time I play Wolverine I want to go further, physically and emotionally.”

He’s also not opposed to a recasting, even if he’d prefer to be Wolverine forever. “I know that someday they’ll recast the role with another actor…I’d be happy if the role was eventually recast. It would mean that it had become iconic.”

Resting on his heels doesn’t seem to work and explains his physical exercise and maintenance principles. “I don’t believe in stagnation. People say they try to maintain the status quo.” Yet building a new, more transformed body for Wolverine requires more in-depth looks.

“But I believe the natural cycle means you’re either advancing and getting closer to something or you’re receding.” Looking at the actor’s muscle tone and shape for the role of the past 15 years means he’s probably not receding in much during the training.

However, the bigger question is where Wolverine will fall in the X-Men franchise line up. Will his last stand happen in X-Men: Apocalypse, a dystopian setting due out next year, or the untitled Wolverine 3 project set for a 2017 release? Speculation tends to fall more to the last option. Fox seems to like trilogies for the superhero franchise.

Or will he suddenly appear in Ryan Reynold’s Deadpool movie and end his contract as a sidekick to the Merc with a mouth, a sort of irreverant “bub” moment?

Movieweb believes a cameo /4/be in order if Wade Wilson’s on the hunt for Weapon X info. And it does offer a convenient way to wipe Jackman’s Wolverine from the latest Fox reboot trilogy of the X-Men series after Days of Future Past (2014.)

And the official synopsis sets up the changes through a few hints and possibilities:

Based upon Marvel Comics’ most unconventional anti-hero, DEADPOOL tells the origin story of former Special Forces operative turned mercenary Wade Wilson, who after being subjected to a rogue experiment that leaves him with accelerated healing powers, adopts the alter ego Deadpool. Armed with his new abilities and a dark, twisted sense of humor, Deadpool hunts down the man who nearly destroyed his life.

No one knows what’ll happen with Wolverine yet but fans are anticipating more information after the bombshell. Users on his Instagram thanked the actor for creating a character that connected and inspired while other spoke about how much they had grown up with Jackman as the only Wolverine.

While news organizations claim to know the final production, it’s a little early to tell. After all, Hugh Jackman just announced the end of an era without any kind of warning.

Who knows what else fans and media outlets /4/learn in the next few days?
