Amy Winehouse Documentary Gives Chills

The documentary follows the singer’s rise to fame and foreshadows her struggles with sobriety and the spotlight.

Distribution company A24 revealed to be in talks to gain the rights to the documentary about Amy Winehouse’s life, according to The Hollywood Reporter. This will be the company’s first documentary feature, and is scheduled in the UK for a summer release on July 3rd, three months shy of the anniversary of her death. The trailer below is to the gloomy “Back to Black” and features an interview with the singer while recording her breakout song “Rehab”:

Asif Kapadia, BAFTA Award winner for Best Documentary for Senna, is the director of the documentary which will also feature previously unreleased songs and clips of the singer from childhood to right near the time of her death. It will show performances, paparazzi clips, and personal images from friends and family.

Winehouse, the tiny singer with the big hair and even bigger voice died in 2011 and became the newest member of the fabled “27 Club,” adding to the love and mystery that followed her meteoric rise to the top. Fans of the singer knew about her drug and alcohol problems, but that did not lessen the blow of her death, especially after months of rehab and a cleaner look for Winehouse. There is no word as to how much of her addiction the documentary will show, nor how close to her death the timeline will go.

There is no word yet about a possible release date in the United States or elsewhere.
