Michael was eliminated from the celebrity dance show after his Rumba performance that was dedicated to his estranged father saying it was his best performance to date.
It is hard when the whole world seems to be participating in an elaborate scheme or so it would seem to Michael Sam. Having won the 2013 Southeastern Conference defensive player of the year award, he was picked up the St.
Louis Rams for at the seventh round of the 2014 draft. He was cut off before the season began and was picked up by the practice squad for the Dallas Cowboys but he never got to playing for them either.
The timing of it all was certainly peculiar especially as it happened around the time when Michael got engaged to his boyfriend Vito Cammisano. He was the first openly gay draft pick in NFL who never got to play.
ABC’s Dancing with the Stars chose to seem to want him to be busy so he was invited to sign on for the show. Unfortunately, Michael’s time in the show has come to an end as well. He is the third contestant to be eliminated from the show.
The elimination came after his performance of the Rumba with his dance partner Peta Murgatroyd. The performance was dedicated to his estranged father on the song “I’m Not My Father’s Son”. The performance only yielded 30 out of a 40 although the judges had great things to say about his performance.
Spoiler Alert: the newly eliminated couple tells us what’s in store for them after #DWTS.Posted by Dancing with the Stars on Monday, April 6, 2015
“It takes an enormous amount of guts to stand for what you believe in,” choreographer Bruno Tonioli told him and added; “Your voice is very important, and I guarantee you, it’s helped a lot of people.” Sam’s father had said that he was a “man-and-a-woman type of guy.”
Although he retracted his statement later on, it was taken in the subtle sense of his protestation of his son’s sexuality. With the performance, Michael seemed to have been sending a message and thus Bruno comments made things clear.
Thank you to the fans, @DancingABC & my incredible partner @PetaMurgatroyd. This truly was one of the most incredible experiences of my life— Michael Sam (@MichaelSamNFL) April 7, 2015
When giving an interview to AccessHollywood post elimination, Michael said that he did anticipate being eliminated when he was left in the bottom three. He was glad that he was eliminated after his best performance and not his worst performance so he was leaving on a bittersweet note. Peta commented that she had found a great friend in Michael. He was hard-working and they will definitely be friends for life.
When asked about his father, Michael said that he hadn’t talked to him since February 2014 but he said that “Time will heal all wounds,” and “I know, eventually, I probably can forgive my father and speak to him.”
He said that his dad was old school and it was going to take time that he will mature and forgive his father and talk to him again. Michael was definitely emotional and he was optimistic that people had gotten to see his story. He will now be training to return to NFL once more. His only regret will be that he will miss Peta a lot.
