Ewan McGregor is in final negotiations to Disney for starring in live-action reboot “Beauty and the Beast”. According to Hollywood Reporter, the Scottish actor will play the role of Lumiere, the living candlestick in the upcoming film.
The 44 years old actor will join a star-studded lineup, featuring Harry Potter famed actress Emma Watson as Belle and Dan Stevens as the Beast. Other supporting cast includes Luke Evans, Josh Gad, Emma Thompson, Ian McKellen and Kevin Kline.
Lumiere, which will be played by Ewan is a supporting yet an influential character of the film. He is the dignified Maître d’ of the prince’s castle who turns into a candlestick from the curse of a witch. Lumiere was also featured in the song “Be Our Guest”.
The remake will be directed by Bill Condon with David Hoberman and Todd Lieberman producing the film. Alan Menken who was the music director of the original 1991 adaptation, will score the remake as well. It has been already told that the remake will have new versions of two songs from the original film along with some new songs written by Menken and Tim Rice.
The 1991 Beauty and the Beast received Oscar nomination in multiple categories, making it very few animated films to be nominated for the Oscars. The film also won Oscar in Best Original Score and Best Original Song.
Disney have done remakes of several classic tales before such as “Cinderella, The Jungle Book, Mulan, Winnie the Pooh. The latest is Beauty and the Beast which is expected to hit theaters in March 17, 2017.
Shooting will begin the next month and the location will be Shepperton Studios, London.
