Specialty shops are giving away thousands of comic books from top publishers including Marvel, DC and Dark Horse
It’s a fairly big day for comic book fans because each year on the first Saturday in May, Free Comic Book Day is celebrated all over the world (which is /4/2 this year). Free Comic Book Day is a single day where comic book shops will not charge at all for reading comic books and graphic novels. They will distribute them absolutely free to everyone who comes into the shop.
However, some limitations are also involved in the process. A customer can only grab those comic books as freebies which are listed free by the shop itself. It means not every comic book in the shelf is there for grabbing. You need to check out the list before you pick any from your local specialty comic book shop.
This year, some of most notable free titles are The Avengers, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Cleopatra in Space, Transformers, Pokemon, Lady Justice, Doctor Who, SpongeBob, Phantom, The Tick, Teen Titans, Sonic the Hedgehog and Rabbids. So there is something for everyone from grown-ups to teenagers to real small ones.
According to Time, more than 2,000 shops will give away 5.6 million comics including the books from top publishers like DC, Marvel, Image, Dark Horse and IDW Publishing. The Free Comic Book Day started in 2002 as a promotional effort to bring and involve people of all ages into comic book reading. It is a very successful commercial ploy as well to get your readers hooked and turn them into long-term customers.
Hundreds of stops will also invite comic book artists and writers for showcasing their art in front of thousands of people. If comic book fans want to get some freebies, than Saturday is the day for you. Show up early at your nearby comic book shop because many others like you will be already lined up even before the shop gets open.
