Swatch to Launch Batteries That Could Last Six Months

The battery could power smartwatches and cars.

Swatch, the Swiss watch manufacturer, is planning to launch a battery that could power smartwatches for months. In an interview with Handelszeitung, a Swiss newspaper, Swatch CEO Nick Hayek said that his company is working on a battery that could last up to six months on a single charge.

Hayek also said that Swatch’s long-lasting battery are also capable of powering electric cars. The company has invested millions in the battery project. Swatch owns Renata, a leading producer of micro-batteries for electronic devices. This means that Swatch is more than capable of producing such a battery.

“Whoever brings a battery for a smartwatch to the market that you don’t need to charge for six months has a competitive advantage,” Hayek said. “We’re working intensively on this problem with our research group Belenos and battery producer Renata. Next year we will come to the market with a revolutionary battery, not only for watches but also for automobiles.”

2016 will be a ripe year for smartwatches and electric cars. Apple recently launched its Apple Watch, although reviewers weren’t impressed with its battery life. Tesla, a pioneer in electric cars, is also planning to launch another electric car next year. Nick Hayek is determined to carry out his father’s visionary ideas. Nicolas Hayek, the founder of Swatch, envisioned a modern car that is cost-effective and environmentally friendly.
