- Maggie Gyllenhaal upset by Hollywood’s Discrimination against Women on Ageism
Maggie Gyllenhaal was turned down from a project calling her too old at 37 for being a 55 years old man love interest.
Maggie Gyllenhaal did some Golden Globe worthy work in the Sundance miniseries “The Honorable Woman” playing an Anglo-Israeli woman in the rigors of business. One would think that delivering such a great role, winning a Golden Globe and being a top contender for Emmy would get a woman any part she would want but not in Hollywood.
Hollywood has been discriminating against women for a ling time for one reason or another. The simple lack of female protagonists and main characters in movies in Hollywood are a sorry figure for such a nation that claims to be liberal and diverse. Only 15 out of 100 movies last year featured women in main characters among the highest grossing movies last year. That number is less than 2013 and 2012 but on an overall consideration not figures to be proud of.
Maggie faced discrimination over her age most recently. She was turned down from a project where they told her that she was too old to play the love interest of a 55 years old man. Maggie is just 37 years of age and she told The Wrap that the turn down made her feel hurt. It made her angry, then it made her laugh and then angry again for such double standards in Hollywood.
It is a clear misconduct of judgement that where Maggie who has delivered such great roles in her career, who played such a bold and adventurous threat to every other woman around her in Mona Lisa smile, who was the muse of Batman in The Dark Knight should just be turned down because she’s too old for a ‘55’ years old character.
The shallow standards and discrimination against woman in Hollywood are reaching the public as more actresses reveal the many ways Hollywood discriminates. The authorities have been urged to investigate this clear conduct of discrimination. Meanwhile, Maggie has accepted her rejection with grace and poise and encourages other actresses who are doing some great work currently.
