- Very First Memorial Day in More Than a Dozen Years Without Any Signs of Ground War
Obama was present at the very first Memorial Day of the United States in more than a dozen years without any signs of a ground war actually occurring.
President Obama was there to address the audience at the first U.S. Memorial Day in more than 14 years when there was no ground war taking place. The venue was Arlington Cemetary.
The President spoke about the selfless sacrifices made by those who had served in WWII as well as those who were involved in the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan, according to Reuters.
As the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the United States, he said that all Americans owed a debt of gratitiude to the heroes and heroines who had defended their homeland from terrorists and threats that arose from abroad.
Obama reminded those who had attended the event that it was the first time that a Memorial Day was being held without any ground war in operation in more than 14 years. The Afghanistan War was over and the troops were happy to be back home and in the company of their near and dear ones.
As everyone knows, Obama had been against the Iraq War which was an excuse made up by George W. Bush to gain access to the oil reserves of that nation. Currently though Obama is facing rising militancy in Syria and Iraq by ISIS. However, no ground war is extant and that is a good thing indeed. Nevertheless, Iraq has been left high and dry by the United States and that is problematic.
Obama reiterated the fact that less than 10,000 troops were left to train the local forces in Afghanistan. He gave his word of honor that the number would be whittled down soon to the extent that only a US embassy would be left behind in Afghanistan.
However, he did say that the threat of the resurgent Taliban in Afghanistan made that region one that was very volatile. The presence of US troops on Afghan soil was thus a necessity for the time being.
The Prez also said that we owed our lives to the 1% who laid down their lives on battlefields all around the world. Were it not for these brave souls, the rights and freedoms we take for granted in the Free World would be non-existent.
He amply thanked the sons and daughters of the Land of the Free and Home of the Brave for putting up a fight to defend the heritage of Western Civilization in the form of democracy, human rights and the pursuit of and happiness, reported NYDaily.
