Andre Johnson on Andrew Luck: ‘I Think He’s The Best Quarterback In The Game’

In an exclusive interview with ESPN on June 9, new Indianapolis Colts wide receiver Andre Johnson said Andrew Luck is “the best quarterback in the game.”

When it comes to today’s quarterbacks in the NFL, Andre Johnson thinks his teammate, Andrew Luck, is the best. 

This was what Johnson told ESPN’s Mike Wells on June 9.

“He’s a hell of a player,” Johnson told ESPN. “I think he’s the best quarterback in this game.” 

Wells stresses Johnson’s praising Luck is especially noteworthy since the Colts quarterback, a fourth-year pro, has never been to the Super Bowl and the likes of Tom Brady and Aaron Rodgers are still playing in the NFL.

Johnson told Wells he wanted to play for a Super Bowl contender who has an elite quarterback after the Houston Texans released him this offseason. 

Luck amassed a total of 12,957 passing yards during his first three seasons — the most by any quarterback during that span. That time frame also saw Luck leading Indianapolis to 12 game-winning drives in the fourth quarter, per Wells. 

The Texans made Johnson the third overall pick of the 2003 NFL draft. Since then, he’s had to catch passes from quarterbacks such as David Carr, Matt Schaub, Case Keenum and Ryan Fitzpatrick. 

Johnson himself admitted he’s never had the opportunity to play with a quarterback of Luck’s caliber. By having a play caller like that, the new Colts wide receiver believes his team is poised to win a Super Bowl title, per ESPN:

“When you look at all the teams that have won Super Bowls over the past few years, they’ve all had great quarterback play, and we have a great quarterback here. I can’t say I’ve been fortunate enough to play with a great quarterback in my 12 years in this league, so I’m able to play with one now.”

According to Indianapolis Star Colts insider Stephen Holder, Luck “does not react meekly” when Johnson runs an incorrect route during practice. Luck not only tells Johnson to correct his error, he also shows him how. 

With this, Johnson told Holder that Luck being a hands-on quarterback is a trait which makes him a great one:

“When he wants something done a certain way, he’s going to come to you and tell you how he wants it done…I think that’s what makes him great. Some guys will tell you and not really show you. But he’s kind of hands-on. 

“If you want to be great, that’s what great players do. (Even though) he’s younger than me, I don’t have a problem with that. Throughout my career, I’ve always told rookies, ‘If you do see me do something wrong, tell me.’

“That’s the only way you’re going to get better as a player. I don’t have a problem with that at all.”

Holder stresses the Colts’ passing game “has been crisp,” thanks in part to Johnson’s work ethic. He and the Colts’ new players such as Duron Carter and Phillip Dorsett have been putting in the work during the offseason and so far, it has paid off. 

For his part, Luck has certainly come a long way in the NFL. 

New Colts offenisve lineman Todd Herremans told Steve Andress of the team’s official website before the team’s mandatory veteran mini-camp practice on June 9 Luck is not just any quarterback. He also carries himself like a coach on the field:

“I see that, yeah. I was never really sure what he was like off the field, but he definitely conducts himself on the field like a coach. Then once I got here, and I was able to listen to him talk in the meeting rooms and in the install and everything, he’s basically coach/player. That’s exactly what his role is, and he’s excellent at both of them.”

Luck told Andress the veteran mini-camp practice on Tuesday was an opportunity for the Colts to fine tune their offense, which is being orchestrated by Pep Hamilton:

“This is going into year three with Coach Pep (Hamilton) as the (offensive) coordinator. So, certainly the guys that have been here have a better grasp and understanding of what we’re trying to accomplish. 

“It allows for us to speed up that install process, during the offseason and get working on very, very specific things for the offense. 

“I think it also helps the new guys acclimate. You can ask questions to everybody, not just the coaches, and you should be able to find an answer.”

The 25-year-old Luck has also passed for 86 touchdowns on an 86.6 passer rating in 48 career regular-season games for the Indianapolis Colts, per ESPN stats.
