Apple bought GPS Company Coherent Navigation

Apple confirmed acquisition of Coherent Navigation.

Apple has bought another navigation company. First reported by MacRumors on Sunday, Apple has acquired Coherent Navigation. The company was founded in 2008 and worked on high-accuracy GPS. The High-Integrity GPS system combines (iGPS) signals from the traditional mid-earth orbit GPS satellites with those from the low-earth satellites achieving location accuracy within centimeters – scary!

“Apple buys smaller technology companies from time to time, and we generally do not discuss our purpose or plans,” the company said in an email to The New York Times. This is Apple’s typical statement confirming an acquisition.

The site of Coherent Navigation has been already taken down.

Apple has bought a slew of navigation and location technology companies over the past years ever since the company started to offer its own navigation software. Before Apple used Google Maps.
