Apple jerks Blockchain bitcoin wallet app from the App Store

One developer thinks Apple doesn’t want competition

Bitcoin is easily the most popular of all the virtual currencies out there. It also happens to be the most valuable of all virtual currencies with a single bitcoin worth hundreds of dollars. The exact value of the bitcoin changes daily.

In the past, there were several apps on the Apple App Store that were designed to be bitcoin wallets. Apple has been systematically pulling those apps off the store. This week Apple pulled the last bitcoin wallet app off the App Store reports 9to5Mac. That final app was called Blockchain.

There was no reason given as to why exactly the app was removed. The other two apps that were previously removed include BitPak and Coinbase. Blockchain had been on the App Store since 2012 and boasted around 120,000 users.

The developer of Blockchain has said that he thinks the reason Apple pulled the apps is that it doesn’t want competitions in the mobile payment market. The more likely reason for the apps to be pulled is that the virtual currency they deal with is unregulated and some countries have tipped that it can be used for illegal purposes, such as terrorism funding and money laundering.
