Execs in talk with TV programmers
Streaming and web based television is something that has been taking off over the past couple of years. Apple has always been wanting to get into this market but have not really put any full effort towards it. It looks now that could be a thing of the past. It is being announced that Apple could be launching an ‘over the top’ television service similar to one by Dish called Sling TV and one that is being said to be developed by Sony.
It is being said that Apple would sell a type of bundle programming and that it would be tailored and customized to the consumers preferences. Apple would be selling this service exclusively online. Apple apparently has been in the works working on this new television option and have even shown demos to perspective television programmers and engineers. There have been several programmers who have been saying that they have not had any talks with Apple but one thing for certain is that the early stages of this project by Apple are certainly being manipulated.
It was back in 2009 that Apple experimented with a $30 a month subscription service but it was not able to garner any steam. Apple plans on working with the companies that own the programming rights and not working with the television stations themselves. During an event that was held last year, Apple CEO Tim Cook made a faint reference to Apple venturing into the TV market when he said that the current TV situation ‘sucks’. The innovation of Apple could certainly pull something like this off so the logistics and programming part of this type of television access could certainly happen. The company already has the Apple TV box which allows for streaming television to be accessed through ones television set. The thing is that Apple does not own any of the programming that is shown. That is owned by the major television stations and studios just like on satellite television and cable. This new idea though could do just that and make Apple one of the major producers of television content via online.
