The 4th generation Apple TV will not initially support 4K video streaming.
Those who are planning to buy Apple’s upcoming Apple TV will be slightly unnerved by the lack of 4K video capability. Sources, with knowledge of Apple’s plans, tell BuzzFeed News that the next-generation Apple TV will not be able to support 4K video streaming, although Apple might support the technology in the future.
When first rumors about a 2015 Apple TV arrived last month, we predicted that Apple would put 4K support into the new Apple TV. According to this new rumor it will not, which is another slow-down for the 4K advancement.
“4K is great, but it’s still in its infancy,” one source tells BuzzFeed News. 4K is a growing trend. Consumer electronics companies have launched their own 4K TVs, promising more pixels and sharper resolutions. While the difference between 4K and Full HD is barely noticeable, the former has four times the resolution of the standard 1080p resolution used in many HDTVs.
While 4K video is great, the technology is expensive. Plus, Apple doesn’t like to rush; it prefers to wait, watch, and test emerging trends before launching a polished product or service that is, in most cases, better than the rest. Given the case, it’s easy to understand why the 4th generation Apple TV will not support 4K video streaming.
According to Dan Rayburn, principal analyst at Frost & Sullivan, the additional cost to deliver video in 4K is huge. “No one wants to talk about it, but going from Netflix’s average 3Mbps stream to their 4K stream at 16Mbps is very expensive. That’s why it’s said it will offer ‘limited’ content in 4K for a long time. 4K is many, many years away from being adopted at critical mass.” Apple did not comment on the report.
