The ZenFone 2 will be unlocked and sold through retailers.
Asus has launched its flagship Android smartphone, the ZenFone 2, in the United States. At the company’s press event today, Asus Chairman Jonney Shih announced that the ZenFone 2 will be available as an unlocked device through retailers like Amazon and Newegg. However, Asus said that the smartphone will arrive on AT&T later this year.
“ZenFone 2 has been incredibly popular with consumers in Asia and Europe, and we are very excited to bring this empowering luxury to North America,” said Mr. Shih. “Striking the perfect balance of beauty, functionality, and performance, ZenFone 2 embodies every aspect of the ASUS In Search of Incredible brand spirit to provide an unparalleled experience to users.”
Aicha Evans, Intel Corporate Vice President and General Manager of the Communication and Devices Group, joined Mr. Shih onstage in celebration of the long-term partnership between the two companies. “We are excited to support ASUS in bringing the popular ZenFone 2 to North America,” said Ms. Evans. “We are proud that our long-standing relationship with ASUS continues to deliver innovation. With the ZenFone 2, people will have a great mobile experience in an affordable and sleek form factor, enabled by the 64-bit Intel Atom processor together with Intel’s LTE-Advanced XMM 7260 modem for fast and reliable cellular speeds.”
For starters, the Asus ZenFone 2 comes in two models. The base model features an Intel Atom Moorefield Z3560 processor clocked at 1.8GHz, 2GB of RAM and 16GB of storage. The high-end model, on the other hand, boasts an Intel Atom Moorefield Z3580 clocked at 2.33GHz, 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage. They are now being sold for $199 and $299, respectively.
The rest of the specs are identical. Both models have a 13-megapixel rear camera and 5-megapixel front-facing camera. You’ll also get a 3,000mAh battery, LTE and NFC capabilities, dual-SIM support, microSD and microUSB 2.0 ports, and Android 5.0 Lollipop under Asus’s Zen UI.
Asus also announced the debut of the ZenBook UX305 and ZenBook Pro UX501. The ZenBook UX305 is powered by an Intel Core M processor, 8GB of RAM and up to 512GB of SSD storage. The notebook sports a 13.3-inch display. Meanwhile, the ZenBook Pro UX501 packs a quad-core Intel Core i7 4720HQ processor, 16GB RAM, and 512GB storage. It has a 15.6-inch display.
