Avengers: Age Of Ultron Gets Mixed Reviews

Marvel has been appreciated for its quality of movies and the big net that Joss Whedon has been able to put out by making individualistic superhero movies and then bringing them together in 2012’s Marvel Avengers. Since the release of the first movie which became the highest grossing movie of the time and won multiple awards, the sequel has been awaited most anxiously.

To build it up even more, Marvel released Iron Man 3, Thor: The Dark World and Captain America: The Winter Soldier in between. Not to forget the Marvel Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. which is in its second season currently and has been true to building up the story right to the point of actually stepping right into Marvel Avengers: Age of Ultron. You could have just watched Tuesday’s episode of the TV show where the future seeing Raina predicts big metal men causing worldwide chaos and destruction. 

So heading out to the theatres to watch the most awaited sequel of this year, the fans expected greatness and more greatness. The movie starts with some kick ass action form the Avengers as they take out one of Hydra’s many facilities.

Now working together as a unit which was very much unbelievable in the first part of the movie when they were figuring out how to fit together as a unit. Now Captain America and Iron Man seems to be best friend, Hawkeye is an essential part of the unit. Black Widow plays the ‘calm down’ cue to the Hulk. So what might we expect from this movie? If the Avengers are not fighting, then what’s the main attraction?

Looks like Stark and Banner collaborated to make a robot/alien specimen to alternate the Avengers in situations where they won’t be affective. The head robot is named by Ultron and to make it extra dangerous Ultron is voiced by James Spader.

So what is Ultron’s mission in the scheme of the world? Ultron is an artificially intelligent specimen which has made several assumptions about humanity. For the piece of humanity, Ultron assumes that the evolution of humanity is in itself a destructive factor and in the destruction itself, only superheroes will come out on top. In that assumption, superheroes of the world aka Avengers must be destroyed. 

So he’s coming after the Avengers. With their lives in jeopardy, the Avengers become a tighter group altogether contrary to the grudging crew onboard Fury’s ship in the first part. So contrary to the first part’s villain Loki who played them against each other, Ultron brings them together for survival. 

Thrown in the mix are the twins Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver who were being developed by Hydra. Scarlet Witch manages to do what Loki did in a modified form by making the Avengers remember their darkest times and we get a glimpse into the character’s past and that gives pace to the character development clause any movie but they get inspired by the team’s unity and decide to join against Ultron. 

The movie is bigger and almost better than the first part although most critics and fans will agree to disagree. The movie is definitely bigger, with better technology in operation (look at the new Iron Man suit), better choreographed and planned stunts and better graphics and these are all the things that any Marvel’s fan would love.

The story however lacked in comparison to the first part according to many. With a lot of characters on screen, there was hardly any character that got priority screen time which might be for the better, only it ended up distracting the audience.

The character development was minimal and the story seemed incomplete as it seemed more like a halfway bridge to further movies like Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Infinity Wars that have already been announced. It is sometimes better to have the movies be shot in continuance only if they justify their own story in their true sense. 

Many criticized Howard James for changing the story plot of X-Men: Days of the Future Past, bringing back the characters that had been killed off in earlier movies but it was justified in the end and people learned to appreciate it.

For Avengers, that doesn’t seem to be happening. The characters looked to be in a static, dragging themselves, each other and the story down with them. Whereas Paul Bettany and James Spader did deliver high ranking performances, the plot of the story dragged them down as well with copulated screen time and even Quicksilver played by Aaron Taylor Johnson didn’t make enough screen impact that was given to the Scarlet Witch only because she had the power to make the Avengers suffer by a lot.

The fans and critics have come out with a foreboding expectation that the next movies will be better as this one didn’t deliver on the grounds of story building of following but it is definitely an entertaining ploy for the summers that fans could head out to theatres for to enjoy some superhero fun.
