The interview set a new record for most number of tweets for a TV show
The exclusive interview of Bruce Jenner about his gender identity attracted more people than anticipated. The two-hour interview which was aired on ABC turned out to a hot topic of conversation on social media.
According to Nielsen Social, 972,000 tweets from 403,000 unique authors poured in throughout the broadcast of the event, setting a new record for most number of tweets for a TV show. The previous record which was held by “Highwire over Niagara Falls” also aired on ABC, Varitey reported.
The Friday interview where Bruce Jenner for the first time spoke about his male to female transition was watched by a whopping 16.9 million viewers. The interview also managed to get a huge rating of 5.2 among the people aged 18-49 which makes it the top rated program in all categories excluding a sporting event. It is now become the most viewed Friday telecast of all time, outperforming Barbara Walters’s interview conducted with the parents of JonBenet Ramsay.
Bruce Jenner received massive support from the public as well as from the fellow celebrities after the interview went on air. Among those who tweeted and showed their support were Oprah Winfrey, Lady Gaga, Jennifer Lopez, Laverne Cox, Ellen DeGeneres and Rosie O’Donnell. They all appreciated Bruce Jenner for publically coming out as a transgender and sharing his story with the world. Most of them consider it a brave move to discussing openly your gender identity and sharing how you think about yourself.
