- Charles Barkley said he won’t eat until the L.A. Lakers win a game.
- The Lakers are currently 0-5.
- The Lakers will take on the Charlotte Hornets on Nov. 9.
Retired NBA superstar and current TNT analyst Charles Barkley vowed not to eat until the Los Angeles Lakers win a game in the 2014-15 NBA season.
Charles Barkley is going on a hunger strike until the Los Angeles Lakers win a game in the 2014-15 NBA season.
Barkley made the vow on Nov. 7, per The Los Angeles Times’ Eric Pincus. The Lakers are 0-5 as of Nov. 9:
“Former All-Star and current TNT analyst Charles Barkley has fluctuated in weight throughout much of his post-NBA career. His waist size is often a topic for levity on the ‘Inside the NBA‘ broadcast.
“On Thursday night, Barkley made an outlandish comment.
“‘I’m not going to eat another meal until the Lakers win a game,’ he said.
“The Lakers have started the season 0-5 and face a difficult schedule through the remainder of November.
“At a minimum, Barkley would go meal-less for almost three days, as the Lakers don’t play again until Sunday night at Staples Center against the Charlotte Hornets (1-3).
“After that, the Lakers hit the road, facing the Memphis Grizzlies (5-0) and then the New Orleans Pelicans (2-2). The Lakers are unlikely to be favored in either contest.
“After returning home on Nov. 14, the Lakers are to face the San Antonio Spurs (2-2) and the Golden State Warriors (4-0).
“It’s no wonder Barkley quickly reconsidered his vow to fast.

“‘Let me rethink that,’ he said moments later.
“As an analyst, Barkley isn’t afraid of saying something outrageous, but through a lengthy hunger strike could put his weight issue to rest, fasting until the Lakers win might be a significant hazard to his health.”
ESPNLosAngeles.com’s Arash Markazi spoke with Lakers head coach Byron Scott, who doesn’t believe Barkely will live up to his promise, on Nov. 7:
“Charles Barkley made a big pledge to the winless Los Angeles Lakers on Thursday:
“‘I’m going on a fast,’ Barkley proclaimed during an ‘Inside the NBA’ segment. ‘I’m not going to eat again until the Lakers win a game.’
“But Lakers coach Byron Scott isn’t buying it.
“‘I think he will eat tomorrow to be honest with you,’ Scott said. ‘I don’t believe he’s going on a hunger strike…To give up food for another couple days, I don’t buy that one bit. He’s probably sneaking it in at home and everything.’
“The 0-5 Lakers’ next game is Sunday at home against the Charlotte Hornets. They then on (the) road back-to-back against (the) Memphis (Grizzlies) and New Orleans (Pelicans), followed by home games against (the) San Antonio (Spurs) and Golden State (Warriors) and a three-game road trip against (the) Atlanta (Hawks), Houston (Rockets) and Dallas (Mavericks).”
