- Former Dallas Cowboys running back thanked Dallas fans in a billboard which was put up in the city this week.
Former Dallas Cowboys running back DeMarco Murray thanked the fans on a billboard sign in downtown Dallas. He signed with the Philadelphia Eagles earlier this month.
DeMarco Murray has thanked Dallas Cowboys fans for their support on a billboard sign.
Shannon Gross of the Cowboys’ official website wrote about the development on March 19:
“Earlier this month Dallas Cowboys’ fans were reminded of the business side of football when DeMarco Murray signed with the Philadelphia Eagles.
“For the most part fans understand that players have a very limited window to make as much money as they can. They put their health and lives on the line every second they are on the football field and their income stream can end at any second. Even the ones that understand the business side of the game, couldn’t quite stomach Murray going to the Cowboys’ biggest rival, the Philadelphia Eagles.
“Their hatred of the Eagles was on display Saturday night as the Ultimate Fighting Championship was in Dallas for a live pay-per-view event. Murray was seated in the front row with former Cowboy, Miles Austin. During a brief intermission Murray was shown on the video board and the arena erupted with boos followed by a chant of ‘Eagles $@%^.’ You’re familiar with this chant if you’ve ever been to a Cowboys home game against Philly.
“If would have been easy for Murray to have taken this public shaming and turn his cheek to the fans that have supported him in the last four years. Instead, he took it as an opportunity to let the fans know he appreciated their support during his time here. This billboard showed up yesterday in downtown Dallas with his simple message ‘THANK YOU DALLAS!'”

When the Eagles signed Murray to a five-year, $42 million deal last week, Dallas Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones thanked him in a 247-word statement obtained by ESPN Dallas’ Todd Archer:
“We are very grateful to DeMarco Murray for his contributions to the Dallas Cowboys. He is a quality person, a very good football player, and a player that we wanted to keep.
“We have great appreciation for his skills, and if there was no salary cap in place, DeMarco would be a Cowboy. This came down to an allocation of dollars within the management of the salary cap.
“Obviously there is emotion involved in those decisions, but it is critical that there must be discipline involved as well. If it were a question of having an open checkbook with no salary cap constraints, we all know things would have worked out differently.
“We have recently made significant commitments to top players who are currently on the team, specifically at key positions such as quarterback, left tackle and wide receiver, and we were comfortable with the offer that we made to DeMarco to include him in that structure.
“These are difficult decisions that are part of the NFL. They are decisions that take into account the entire team, the current economic structure of the team, and the financial concerns for the short- and long-term future of the team.
“At the end of the day, this is about finding the best way to collectively fit all of the individual pieces together, in terms of talent, offensive players, defensive players and dollars–under the salary cap structure—that gives you the best chance to have a championshp team.”
Murray has rushed for 4,526 yards and 28 touchdowns on 934 carries in 53 career regular-season games for the Dallas Cowboys, per ESPN stats.
