Google Patent
Toy makers need to start get weary about Google. They just got some internet connected toy patents.
Internet connected dolls and teddies is the next big wave. We recently reported about The Cognitoys that connect to IBM’s super computer Watson. Barbie also has now a Wi-Fi connection. Google has received now a patent for interactive dolls and teddies. The patent describes the use of dolls to control media devices. The dolls would react to social cues and “turn their attention” to the user and await and execute voice commands.
The connected toys would be equipped with sensors, cameras, speakers and motors.
Google has likely no plans to make internet connected toys. In en email to CNN Money Google (GOOGL) said: “We hold patents on a variety of ideas — some of those ideas later mature into real products or services, some don’t.”
Some of the press coverage about the new Google patent used the word “creepy.” There is nothing creepy about connected toys. They are the future. Adults have a smartphone to get their answers, kids will be able to ask their cuddly friends any question and can use them to control their media. Below is a video of the Dino from Cognitoys that is at the forefront of internet connected toys. They got fully funded on Kickstarter and are busy finishing the intelligent toy.
