How does a young celebrity handle being hacked and dealing with leaked pictures? By taking the situation into her own hands and not backing down.
Kaley Cuoco-Sweeting‘s summer has not been dull.
Recently The Big Bang Theory began filming after the stars negotiated new contracts. And in the meantime, Kaley did the unexpected: she cut her hair into a short pixie ‘do, shocking everyone.
Cuoco-Sweeting told Entertainment Weekly she’d been joking about chopping it off for years. The hair was cut for a movie shot over the summer.
Production started to consider extensions once social media revealed the length had reached beyond the slow progression being sent in.
“I had a talk with the writers [Chuck, Steve, and Bill] and they loved it.” She felt Penny needed to change direction a bit. “And they wrote it in! So I got lucky.” It’s easy to forget how much control the studio has over individual looks outside the show.
During the short behind-the-scenes sneak peek, the actress also admitted her summer break was mostly staying at home on the ranch.
She excitedly added, “And I got a new dog. I rescued another dog.”
But on her appearance on Jimmy Kimmel, she discussed the less-than-stellar moments of summer. When her nudes were hacked and then leaked, the Charmed actress wasn’t quite as enthused.
“I totally have Google alerts that come to my phone, so anything that my name pops up it comes to my phone because I’m, like, obsessed. I need to know what’s going on” The 28-year-old definitely fits the millennial generation then. Who doesn’t check the web for their name?

“So every day, every day there’s like 30 ‘Kaley Cuoco nude photos'” messages that appear on her phone.
“It’s been going on for years. There’s all these fakes ones.” The life of a celebrity must lead to a lot of fake images being promoted for hits, money, and notoriety.
“So then this one came up and I started getting emails saying ‘no, there are some real ones.'” Realizing the truth, she sent out a quick email to family and prepared them for the ugliness to come.
“Just so you know, this happened, blah blah blah. P.S. I’m not pregnant. P.S.S. I’m not getting a divorce.” It’s easy to assume the divorce bit comes from the rumors of a fake, publicity marriage for exposure that’s put out by most tabloids.
Finding out about the leaks through Google alerts, she found the pictures to be “disturbing.” Not because of the content, but the context since she had no control over the exposure. After all, Cuoco-Sweeting just assumed the latest rounds were fake until she received emails telling her to look again.
After alerting her family to the grossness, she took the next steps by posting a picture with her husband and posting it to Instagram.
The actress took the Nudify phone app and blurred out an innocent picture to make it seem very risque.
“It was just a really bad situation but I took it in my own hands and make a joke about it because what are you gonna do?”
Realistically, she came to the best conclusion. “You gotta make fun of yourself.”
And turns out the Big Bang cast and crew helped pick out the best photo to release, too. “All the guys helped me.”
So everyone protected the actress after the media zeroed in on the leaks. And then everyone let the world in on the fact she wouldn’t be broken by malicious people.
No one can hurt you if you’re in on the joke, right?
