It’s the kick-start to the awards season. That is what the 18th annual Hollywood Awards claim to have done. Started back in 1997 by an event programming CEO, not many people have heard of the awards. The awards were televised for the very first time this year.
The nominees and winners for the awards are pre-announced and received a trophy for the first time. A sleek black statuette formed in a stylish H. The winners are decided by rich executives and fans of the movies. The event was arranged at the Hollywood Palladium. It was an open bar and the stars let themselves loose and enjoyed thoroughly.
Queen Latifah hosted the night. She even joked about missing the17th Hollywood Awards. The stars kept the funny streak going as they presented and received awards throughout the evening.
Chris Rock gave a comedic serious speech about waiting all his life to win the award which received laughter from across the room. Chris was receiving the Best Comedy Film award for his movie Take Five.
The Imitation Game’s Benedict Cumberbatch won the Best Hollywood Actor and Kiera Knightley received the award for Best Hollywood Supporting Actress for the same movie. Julianne Moore won the accolades for Hollywood Best Actress for Still Life. Robert Duvall won the Hollywood Best Supporting Actor for his performance in The Judge.
Shailene Woodley scored the Hollywood Breakout Performance Actress for her role in The Fault in our Stars. The equivalent went to Eddie Redmayne for his depiction as Stephen Hawking in the movie The Theory of Everything. Eddie went ahead to give an emotional speech about his days hanging outside Hollywood studios with other British prats, playing ping pong.
Best Hollywood Director went to Morten Tyldum, a new British Director, for his work in The Imitation Game. The Hollywood Breakthrough Director went to Jean-Marc Vailee for his movie Wild. Gone Girl won the Hollywood Film and Guardians of the Galaxy picked up the Best Blockbuster award.
Jack O’ Connell called Angelina Jolie ‘her ladyship’ following on her Honorary Dame title given to her by Queen Elizabeth. She awarded him the New Hollywood award for his role in “Unbroken”, which was directed by Jolie.
The Hollywood Ensemble ensued a hug fest as Jonah Hill gave the award to Channing Tatum and Steve Carrell for Foxcatcher. Michael Keaton won the Hollywood Career Achievement Award following his film Birdman.
The open bar made a contribution in the funny moments in the evening as the slightly drunk stars made several mistakes and bloopers. Jennifer Lopez misidentified How to Train your Dragon as How to Drain your Dragon. Johnny Depp was identified the double headed mic as one of the weirdest things he’d seen in his life.
Gillian Flynn toppled a little as she climbed the stairs to receive the award for Hollywood Screenwriter award. She said that one shouldn’t put a writer in heels and have an open bar at the same time. All in all the night was successful. The red carpet was exciting as well as various stars made stylish arrivals for the show.
