HTC
No, it’s not a periscope. It’s a camera.
So the rumors are true. At HTC‘s “Double Exposure” event today in New York, the Taiwanese consumer electronics company announced its GoPro killer. The RE, pronounced “ree,” is HTC’s newest product from an entirely new category.
Last month, it was rumored that HTC is readying a tube-shaped waterproof camera that will work with mobile devices. HTC is marketing the RE as the perfect camera for those who don’t want to wear a GoPro on their heads. Interestingly, the RE looks like a tiny periscope, ready to explore the outside world.
It does have a tube-like design. There’s no power button, too, as the RE will automatically activate upon pickup. The only button you’ll see is the shutter button that, when pressed for a couple of seconds, will record videos instead of shooting photos.
Specs-wise, the HTC RE dons a 16-megapixel camera that supports Full HD 1080p video recording, slow motion, and time-lapse recording. Another noteworthy feature is its waterproof design, making it a great outdoor camera. Other features include Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and microUSB.
Users can pair the RE with their smartphones via the RE App which is available on iOS and Android. The HTC RE will hit the U.S. in November.
