John Oliver took on the dirty truth about low-cost fashion.
We all know that a $4.99 Dress can’t be made in America. 98% of clothes are made overseas these days, especially in countries with the lowest incomes and void of regulations. There have been many scandals about labor conditions in clothing manufacturing in countries like India and Bangladesh. There also have been devastating accidents that killed hundreds of workers because of lack of building safety.
The low-cost fashion giants H&M, Zara and Walmart always say that they have strict requirements for their suppliers, but still there are sweat shops and child labor. The only way to change the situation is to change consumer habits.
John Oliver took on the topic of cheap fashion in his HBO show last night. He did though not only blame the companies, but also the media showing segments of Today presenting new fashion trends with a strong focus on how cheap the clothes are.
Consumers need to be more aware on how their clothes are made. The problem is though not only with cheap clothes. Expensive brands have their products also manufactured in the same factories overseas. It is extremely difficult for consumers to make sure the clothes they buy are made under human circumstances. Maybe it is time that Made in America clothes need to make a comeback.
