Johnny Manziel Throws Water Bottle At Heckler

According to Irving, Texas police spokesman James McLellan, the fan harassed Manziel relentlessly during the said golf tournament on Saturday. The encounter escalated to the point where authorities had to intervene. However, there were no charges were filed and arrests made, per The Northeast Ohio Media Group’s Mary Kay Cabot. 

McLellan added there was also no evidence of Manziel being “intoxicated or even had been drinking,” per ESPN

The said incident occurred outside the Four Seasons hotel in Irving. Several fans were seen taking photos of Manziel as he was talking to police, per Cabot. 

Police say the perpetrator was an 18-year-old male who heckled Manziel near the hotel’s pool area. The Browns quarterback eventually threw a water bottle at him. Manziel’s friends and hotel security stepped in to prevent the incident from escalating further, per The Northeast Ohio Media Group. 

McLellan reveals the teenager was seeking Manziel’s autograph but he refused, per ESPN:

“There was a kid — I’ll call him a kid, he was 18 — at the pool area. The kid had been asking (Manziel) for a couple of hours for his autograph, and he wouldn’t give it to him. 

“That turned into badgering on the kid’s part, and it reached the point where Johnny Manziel threw a bottle of water at the kid. I don’t know if it hit him. I guess I would say that ramped it up a bit.”

Manziel turned down the fan’s request in a polite manner for the first 10 times he asked because he was with his girlfriend and some friends he had not seen in quite some time, per ESPN. 

An eyewitness told authorities the 32-ounce water bottle, which was three-quarters full, hit a brick wall. Manziel’s friend then intervened and shoved the teenager, per ESPN. 

One of Manziel’s eight-man entourage told ESPN the Browns quarterback grew increasingly frustrated when the teenager kept on tugging at his arm in the course area near the pool. Manziel’s friend told ESPN he remembered him saying, “Can you please not do that? Just please leave me alone.” 

When Manziel was about to leave the golf course, the fan yelled, “good luck never starting in the NFL.” Manziel turned around, said “What?” and threw the water bottle toward the ground. Manziel’s friend told ESPN it was empty when he threw it. 

The ESPN update adds Manziel threw the water bottle from a distance of around 20 yards. According to the report, he “threw the bottle in the fan’s direction but not close to his body and more like a football spike.”

The friend told ESPN the fan yelled, “Good throw, Johnny!” 

Manziel and his group ran into the fan again while waiting for an Uber ride outside the golf course. It was then when the teenager yelled, “Ryan Tannehill is way better than you!” Manziel’s friend then called a car and then they left. 

The teenager declined to press charges for the shove. The ESPN report says it could have been classified as a simple assault if he decided otherwise. 

No police report about the incident was filed, per ESPN. 

Manziel, a Texas native and golf enthusiast, attended the tournament with his friends. His agent, Erik Burkhardt, told Cabot he did the right thing in calling authorities when he was being harassed by the fan. 

Burkhardt added he was in church with Manziel the day after the incident in Dallas. No untoward incident was reported, per The Northeast Ohio Media Group.

Manziel has had a previous history of confrontations with fans. 

In a Nov. 28, 2014 update, Manziel told Cabot he ran into an intoxicated and belligerent fan came to him and put his arms on him at the lobby of his downtown Cleveland residence, the 9.  

The fan was later identified as Chris Gonos. Manziel added Gonos was more aggressive toward his roommate, Dana Kirk, than he was toward him. Security intervened to break things up, per Cabot. 

Almost two months later, some fans reportedly threw drinks at him at a Houston nightclub on Jan. 5, per The Northeast Ohio Media Group. He checked into the Caron Addiction Treatment Center a few weeks later. Manziel has not divulged what the treatments were for.

After Manziel was discharged on April 11, he has been participating in the Browns’ offseason program and organized team activities (OTAs).

His friend and Browns cornerback Joe Haden told Cabot “he’s very happy” for Manziel during the team’s recent golf outing:

“He said he took a lot of things for granted. Just being able to go back there and realize that he is in the NFL. He’s living his dream. He’s a quarterback in the National Football League and what that entitles him. I think he understands that and I’m very happy for him.”

Aside from Manziel’s newfound demeanor, he has also been attending Cleveland Cavaliers playoff games. His close friend and four-time NBA MVP LeBron James is leading the charge in Cleveland’s NBA title pursuit, per The Northeast Ohio Media Group.  

Cabot also reported on Sunday that Manziel has since moved out of The 9 and into “a quiet suburban golf community on Cleveland’s west side” near the residence of his teammate and Browns linebacker Paul Kruger. 

After Manziel’s latest confrontation with a fan, his friend told ESPN on Sunday he is seriously considering hiring a bodyguard to prevent untoward incidents in the future.
