Jony Ive Talks About New Materials For Apple’s Future Products

Jony Ive has been working on never-been-used materials for Apple’s next generation products. Could it be LiquidMetal?

In an interview with the New York Times, Apple’s Design Chief, Jony Ive, talked about the company’s design process. If you have time, you can read the full interview here.

Responding to a question about  the culture at Apple under Tim Cook’s leadership, Ive said that the company hasn’t changed at all and Steve Jobs’ legacy of understanding design is embedded deep into its culture.

“Steve established a set of values, and he established preoccupations and tones that are completely enduring – and he established those principles with a small team of people,” he said. “I’ve been ridiculously lucky to be part of it. But Tim was very much part of that team – for that last 15 or 20 years.”

The 47-year old designer then went on to talk about new materials that he has been working on for Apple’s future products.

“I would love to talk about future stuff – they’re materials we haven’t worked in before. I’ve been working on this stuff for a few years now,” Ive added.

However, Ive didn’t reveal the exact materials. Could it be LiquidMetal?

It’s worth noting that Apple recently renewed its licensing rights to exclusively use LiquidMetal on upcoming iDevices. So far Apple has managed to use the material on its SIM card ejector pin.

Furthermore, the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office also approved an Apple patent application that will allow the company to combine LiquidMetal with sapphire glass displays.
