LG revealed a new Android Wear smartwatch to premiere at the MWC 2015.
The new LG Urbane Smartwatch is LG’s first all-metal luxury Android Wear watch. LG tries to give Android Wear watches a non-tech look with a round style. The LG Urbane follows the LG R Android Wear watch, the first smartwatch with a full circular Plastic OLED (P-OLED) display, which LG launched in October 2014.

While the LG R was aimed at active users, the LG Urbane is more formal with a thinner profile aimed at conservative users. The LG Urbane is built around the same 1.3-inch full circle P-OLED display as the LG R watch but has a narrower bezel.
The Urbane’s stainless steel body is available in polished silver and gold finish and is complemented by a beautifully stitched natural leather strap for a more classic look. The strap can be replaced with any 22mm wide band.
Like the LG R, the Urbane has a photoplethysmography (PPG) sensor that can measure a wearer’s heart rate and average pulse during exercise. Always-On ambient mode shows the time on the display at all times in dimmed mode, saving battery life.
“The LG Watch Urbane’s classic design and smart features make it the perfect smartwatch to complement our G Watch and G Watch R, which were designed as more casual and active devices,” said Juno Cho, president and CEO of LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company. “LG Watch Urbane is an important part of our strategy to develop wearable devices that are worn and viewed as everyday accessories, not electronic gadgets.”
Additional details including price will be announced in local markets at the time of availability.

LG is taking a lesson out of the Apple’s concept for the Apple Watch to offer luxury editions. Smartwatches with a round display are problematic to use for content intense apps. The square format has more promise to be the dominating form factor of smartwatches.
The Mobile World Congress 2015 (MWC 2015) will take place in Barcelona on March 2-5. This year Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg is one of the keynote speakers. We expect that wearables will steal the thunder of smartphone announcements at the MWC 2015.
