Mamma Mia! to close on Broadway after 14 Years

The dramatic overture titled Mamma Mia! is to close on Broadway after 14 years. It is sad but necessary too.

After taking a bow, Judy Craymer finally said the tragic words. Mamma Mia! will not be doing its thing on Broadway any longer. It has been more than a dozen years or so and the skit had entertained many people. But now that is all history.

The show had begun sometime in 2001. By now it had presented its multicolored scripts almost 6000 times. The show is #8 on the list of longest running programs on Broadway. A movie with Meryl Streep and Pierce Brosnan was based on it and bore its name too. That came out about seven years ago. 

But the real life of the party was the Broadway act which really entertained and made many laugh and cry. Up until now over $600 million had been amassed by the Broadway musical and it was a fortune indeed.

The featured city in the show is none other than good old New York or The Big Apple. And the music of ABBA holds pride of place in its soundtrack. It was one of the most seen and liked programs on Broadway and will be cherished by its fans for a long time. 

“Mamma Mia! has celebrated a passionate 14-year love affair with New York City,” Craymer said in his statement to Deadline. “I am thrilled that Mamma Mia! has brought the music of ABBA to Broadway and so grateful to the hundreds of wonderful actors, musicians, stage managers, crew, front of house staff and the other people of the theatre who have given their professional lives and souls to be part of the  family and adventure on Broadway. And a huge thank you to our fans who have come from all over the world to see the show. It’s an honour to be recognised as one of the most popular shows in Broadway history and we’re looking forward to celebrating our last summer at the Broadhurst Theatre.”
