Could Manny Pacquiao be the next president of the Philippines?
Top Rank promoter Bob Arum told TMZ Sports outside Craig’s in West Hollywood on April 14 Pacquiao, an eight-division world champion, has his sights set on the Philippine presidency after he runs for senate in 2016:
“He’s gonna be a president,” Arum told TMZ. “He’s gonna run for senate in the Philippines in 2016…and then in 2023 or maybe later, he’ll run for president of the Philippines.”
In another development, Pacquiao directed and sang his own walkout song for his upcoming /4/2 fight against Floyd Mayweather, Jr., per TMZ. The song is entitled “Lalaban Ako Para Sa Filipino” which translates to “I Fight For The Filipino People.”
According to The Independent’s Kiran Moodley, Pacquiao’s music video is a tribute not only to Filipino fight fans, but his countrymen who perished when Typhoon Haiyan made landfall in Nov. 2013. More than 6,300 were killed.
Moodley lists the lyrics of Pacquiao’s walkout song: “We are going to fight / I am going to fight the world / Fight for your name / I am Filipino / We are Filipino.”
As for Mayweather, he was forced to take a break from training for his superfight with Pacquiao after he split his lip on Tuesday, per ESPN. Arum said the injury was brought about by too many head shots.
“He couldn’t spar for a few days because his lip was cut,” Arum told ESPN on Tuesday. “They had to manufacture a special headgear that covered his lip because every time Floyd got hit, it bled.”
Pacquiao’s training has also been disrupted after the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency did a blood test on him on April 14. Because of that, he decided to run istead of doing gym work, per ESPN.
