Mark Ruffalo defends Avengers: Age of Ultron director Joss Whedon on a Reddit AMA session!
Previously Joss Whedon made headlines when he quit Twitter following heavy criticism of the portrayal of the Black Widow in Avengers: Age of Ultron, even though he later denied leaving due to backlash. Mark Ruffalo the actor who plays Bruce Banner aka The Hulk in Avengers is defending the director as a feminist while some have accused him the opposite.
In a Reddit AMA session where a fan asked him what he thought about the controversy surrounding Whedon, the Hulk called the entire episode as very sad. Ruffalo explained he knows how Joss really feels about women and wanted to make strong female characters.
Ruffalo then went on to share his thoughts on why the whole thing even became an issue as people are simply frustrated and want to see more women in superhero movies especially. According to Ruffalo, what Whedon did with the storyline does make the Black Widow any weaker but just brought the idea of love to a superhero, which is actually beautiful.
Ruffalo claims the Black Widow is actually stronger than Bruce Banner as she can complete her job and their relationship initially begins as friends. What people are really angry about is a lack of female characters and when in a superhero movie a woman has an affair people become highly critical as there isn’t much material to compare it with as compared to male characters.
Ruffalo revealed how the whole criticism has been hard on Joss and is probably even hurting him since the director is basically a champion for women and will remain so. Ruffalo then called Joss Whedon a deeply committed feminist and advocate for women who should not be personally attacked for opinions on a movie storyline.
