Marshawn Lynch Not Expected to Return to Seattle Seahawks in 2015

An Oct. 26 ESPN report says the Seattle Seahawks have “grown tired” of running back Marshawn Lynch’s ways, which /4/prompt them to part ways with him after the 2014 NFL season, per ESPN’s Chris Mortensen.

According to ESPN’s Chris Mortensen, the Seahawks have “grown tired” of Lynch’s ways and antics. Because of these, the team — plus Lynch himself — does not expect him to return to Seattle in 2015:

“Seattle Seahawks running back Marshawn Lynch is not on the trading block, but many in the organization — including Lynch — do not expect the running back to be on the roster in 2015, according to sources. 

“The organization has grown tired of his ways, including pulling a no-show at the White House Super Bowl ceremony, his training camp holdout and his possible contribution to locker-room distractions. 

“He might have been available for a trade by Tuesday’s deadline, sources said, but fullback Derrick Coleman broke his foot in last week’s loss to the (St. Louis) Rams, causing backup running back Robert Turbin to be moved into a fullback role. Christine Michael will continue to get some carries. 

“Meanwhile, quarterback Russell Wilson had nothing to do with the recent trade that sent Percy Harvin to the Jets, sources said.

“Sources said that Wilson has known for almost a month that the Seahawks were going to trade Harvin and, as ESPN reported last week, Wilson argued with general manager John Schneider and coach Pete Carroll to keep Harvin on the team until he was told it was futile to make a case for Harvin, who had worn out his welcome. 

“Any ‘envy’ directed toward Wilson in the locker room is more aligned with quarterback dynamics, including the fact that the star quarterback has major marketing endorsements, sources said. 

“Wilson was asked by the organization if he could limit some of his endorsements but they were all filmed during the offseason and his CBA-driven base salary of $662,000 is about half of what backup Tarvaris Jackson makes. 

“Some of Wilson’s income footed the bill to fly his receivers to California for offseason workouts when they were not allowed on facility grounds. Otherwise, in-season, team sources said that he’s all football, except for the time he spends at Seattle’s Children Hospital on Tuesdays. The so-called divided locker room is very much overstated, sources said.”

ESPN’s Greg Garber discusses how things would be like if Lynch winds up with the San Diego Chargers via a trade for San Diego running back Branden Oliver and a 2015 second-round draft pick in his Oct. 22. blog:

“At 28, he’s not quite the beast he once was, but Lynch can still bring it. He’s the Seahawks’ leading rusher with 420 yards, and quarterback Russell Wilson (327 yards) is the only teammate close in that category.

“Granted, the trade was much more plausible before Seattle jettisoned wide receiver Percy Harvin, sending the enigmatic playmaker to the (New York) Jets last Friday. Nevertheless, the Seahawks might not be done wheeling and dealing.

“Lynch is still viable at 4.3 yards per carry, just over his career mark, but the Seahawks very possibly have considered parting ways with him after this season. They weren’t happy with his training camp holdout. Seattle is paying Lnych $6 million this year, which prorated for a little more than half a season wouldn’t be an awful hit for San Diego. The Seahawks would owe Lynch $7 million next year and he’d count $8.5 million against the salary cap. The Chargers, a little pressed for space, will find a way to make it work.

“So this is house money for Seattle, a team that would be thrilled to get Oliver,  surprisingly effecitive rookie free agent out of Buffalo who is the leading rusher of the Chargers’ injury-riddled running backs corps. The Seahawks are comfortable with Robert Turbin and Christine Michael as backup RBs. The salary swap is attractive because the Seahawks — even after unloading Harvin — are going to need all the space they can find to lock down Wilson.

“The Seahawks /4/not be the devastating opponent they were a year ago, but they are still formidable. They signed defensive backs Richard Sherman and Earl Thomas to long-term deals and have a strong core in place on both sides of the ball. Moving on from Lynch before next year and finding a young set of replacement legs allows them to get position for negotiations with their young, gifted quarterback.”

Lynch has rushed for 7,809 yards and 61 touchdowns on 1,850 carries in 110 career regular-season games for the Buffalo Bills and Seattle Seahawks, per ESPN stats.
