Native Americans Seek Crowd Funding for Super Bowl Ad to Fight Redskins Team Name

The National Congress of American Indians organization has launched a Kickstarter project to raise money for a Super Bowl Ad to fight the Redskins NFL team name.

The National Congress of American Indians (NCAI) started a Kickstarter project to raise money for a Super Bowl 2015 ad. The organizations tries to raise awareness and pressure again to have the Redskins NFL team change their name. The team is still defending the name and shows no signs of considering a name change. This controversy already drags on for decades, but got more attention again over the last year.

The NCAI already produced an ad titled Proud To Be around the time of last year’s Super Bowl. It did not run during the Super Bowl. The Proud to Be commercial still got a lot of attention and went viral. It stands now at 3.2m views on Youtube.

The goal of the new #ChangetheMascot SuperBowl Ad has only a goal of $20,000. This of course is not enough to get a Super Bowl ad slot in the NBC broadcast of the Super Bowl 2015. The 2015 Super Bowl ad prices are at a record breaking $4.5 million for 30 seconds.

The NCAI plans to use the funding for a new commercial and digital campaign to raise more awareness than last year.

You can become a supporter of the effort on Kickstarter. There are only 9 days left and right now only 10% of the goal has been reached.

Watch John Oliver taking on the controversy in his HBO show. This will likely convince you to support the effort.

The National Congress of American Indians, founded in 1944, is the oldest, largest and most representative American Indian and Alaska Native organization.
