Nepal Quake: Death Toll tops 3600

Those who were tragically killed by the recent earthquake in Nepal have reached a staggering number.

Over 3,617 people have died in the peace-shattering earthquake that visited the regions of Nepal and India recently. About 1,302 of these deaths took place in the Kathmandu Valley, such was the degree of destruction the earthquake wreaked in its epicenter.

Over 6,515 people were hurt by the calamity in Nepal too. Meanwhile, an avalanche caused by this natural disaster on the foothills of Mount Everest led to the demise of 18 people. And in India, 61 people lost their lives.

On the other hand, foreigners in Nepal are worried sick since most of the amenities have been deeply affected by the force of Nature. Nutrition, drinking water and electricity are unknown thanks to the disruption caused by the earthquake.

Even hotel rooms are a rarity so that a Quebec-based tourist had to sleep on the sidewalk. People are genuinely frightened for their lives. And those who arrived from outside Nepal want to leave in a jiffy. Many haven’t had a decent meal since the scourge struck the otherwise peaceful and pristine country. Everyone is making a beeline for the embassy. 

Israel is sending a rescue mission that will search for people trapped beneath the tons of debris. There were about 150 Israelis whose whereabouts are unknown since the geological deluge took place. As for the global aid agency Oxfam, it is sending in supplies of clean drinking water and means of hygienic waste disposal.

Over 30,000 individuals are living in mean makeshift hovels made by the governmental authorities. Many of the roads are in a bad condition leaving the transportation sector in a mess. The picture is still not clear but it appears to be the case that whole villages of upto a thousand people have vanished beneath the soil and rocks caused by the upheaval.

The army and its brave soldiers are playing their part in rescuing those affected. It is indeed a race against time that is taking place to save lives and lend succor to the wounded, destitute and dispossessed people.

Australia and New Zealand too have sent their teams along with tons of supplies to assuage hunger and thirst among the survivors. Some of the locals though are often seen taking selfies before dilapidated monuments.

This is a cause for sadness since instead of helping the survivors or doing their part in unearthing the dead, they are busy doing selfish things. Some of them can even be seen smiling while taking pictures of themselves with their smart phones.
