Netflix is looking to hire someone in the UK to watch movies and TV shows and “tag” them to help improve the customer experience.
Known as “taggers”, the lucky candidate will be responsible for watching and analysing movies and TV programmes that are yet to be streamed on Netflix.
Netflix calls this the “tagging process”, where taggers choose from a pool of a 1000 words that best describe the programme. Be it tone, plot, description, style, scenario etc.
On the job description, Netflix explained that this is the first stage of its recommendation system: “ It works in concert with advanced algorithms that generate highly personalized suggestions for every one of Netflix’s nearly 50 million members, offering them an individualized set of titles matching their tastes.”
So what does it take to land the ultimate job? You need to be a serious movie buff, obviously. Netflix is looking for someone with a “passion” for movies and TV programmes. Which should be evidenced by a degree in a related field, or someone who has worked in the arts and has some analysis experience.
Speaking to TechRadar, Todd Yellin VP of product innovation, explained what kind of candidates Netflix is looking for: “I do consider myself to be a film geek and I am into a lot of the content on Netflix and that’s what we want. What we are looking for is someone who is a real expert on movies on TV shows.
“They /4/have done script coverage for a production company or have been a film critic or someone who is just mad about movies.
“When we have whittled it down to a manageable number, we will give them a title or two to tag and see what happens.”
Netflix currently has 40 taggers in other countries, but it’s hiring for the first time in the UK. It’s also looking to boost its number of taggers as the company – and its library – grows.
