NFL Adjusts Extra Point

In a recent meeting of the NFL commission, there will be some changes in the way the teams can gain points. Dean Blandino, the NFL’s vice president of officiating, tweeted that the meeting resulted in some changes for extra points starting in the next season. The snap for a kick was also changed as it will now be from the 15-yard line, while any two-point conversion attempt will still take place from the two-yard line, according to Bleacher Report. The defense will also be able to return any conversion try instead of just specific ones

The proposal passed with a vote of 30-2, with the Redskins and Raiders voting against the rule change, per Bob Glauber.

There were two proposals made for the change of fielding on extra points, according to NFL Communications, who confirmed that extra points would be a topic of discussion during the meeting and provided an outline of possible solutions to the different problems. The teams included in the discussion included: The New England Patriots, Philadelphia Eagles and the Competition Committee, who all put forward one plan each to alter the point after touchdown.

The Patriots, who have been facing some problems of their own recently, proposed that the teams should have a choice between going for attempting the extra point from the 15 or a two point conversion from the two. Philadelphia’s proposal was very similar in style, but had more incentive built into it for the team in scoring position to go for the two.

According to Bleacher Report, “The Eagles’ plan also called for the extra-point play from the 15. The two-point try would be moved up to the 1-yard line, however. The defense would also be allowed to return a fumble or interception the other way for two points. Safeties, worth two points, are also in play under the scenario.”

The solution was to use elements from both of the teams’ proposals, and the solution was favored by many members of the NFL and has received applause from the general fan groups.
